Thome tames the Wildcats in 3-0 shutout
Cathedral earned their first shutout of the season, defeating New London-Spicer 3-0 on Thursday night. The Crusaders set the tone early, scoring two first inning runs. Phil Imholte led off the game with a double to right center. Steve Rindelaub promptly drove him in with a double to nearly the exact same spot. Nate Schmidt followed with a single plating the second run of the game. Cathedral struck again in the second, this time with two outs. Number nine hitter Tanner Smuda drove a single to left, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and stole third, before being driven home on an Imholte single. Despite not scoring after the second, the three runs they did score proved to be enough thanks to a dominant pitching performance by freshman Andrew Thome. Thome, making his first varsity start and just his second appearance was nearly unhittable. In the complete game effort, Thome allowed three hits, two hit batsmen, no walks and struck out eight while allowing zero runs. He retired the last seven batters that he faced to close out the game. Imholte (2), Rindelaub, Schmidt, Smuda, and Eric Schwinghammer all had hits for the Crusaders.

#1 Cathedral busted out their new yellow hats that helped to bolster a 4-1 victory over #10 Paynesville on Monday night, improving their record to 3-1. The Crusaders were led by pitcher Adam Theis, who tossed his second complete game in as many starts. Cathedral got on the board in the second with a pair of timely two-out RBI singles by Josh Janzen and Phil Imholte. The Crusaders added another run in the third on a Tom Spaniol double and one more in the 7th on a sacrifice fly by Steve Rindelaub. Paynesville's lone run came with one out in the seventh inning. Theis finished the game facing just four over the minimum, while allowing two hits, one walk, and striking out eight batters. Cathedral loses tight game to Albany, 2-1
Cathedral lost 2-1 to Albany Tuesday evening, falling to 2-1 on the year. Albany jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on pitcher Phil Imholte with a first inning run. Despite a narrow margin, the Huskies appeared to be in control behind a strong pitching performance from Brad Mergen. He held the Crusaders scoreless through 5 innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five, preserving the 1-0 lead. Following the 5th innings, Mergen was lifted in favor of Matt Blackmore, who the Crusaders quickly jumped on. Steve Rindelaub lead off the 6th inning with a sharp single and was moved over to second base on an Adam Theis bunt. Tom Spaniol followed with an RBI double to left center field, tying the game at one. The game appeared to be headed for extra innings when Albany’s Kyle Burg hit a groundball to Rindelaub at shortstop, but Rindelaub’s throw was high, pulling Nick Maiers off the bag. Zach Posterick followed with the game-winning double to right center field. Adam Theis took the loss despite pitching well in relief, allowing just one hit and two walks in 2 2/3 innings. |

Six runs proved to be more than enough for starting pitcher Adam Theis who fired a complete game. In the process, Theis struck out eight Wildcat hitters while facing just three over the minimum with two walks and one hit allowed. His lone run allowed was unearned. Phil Imholte added two hits and Brace Hemmelgarn had 2 stolen bases, a run, and an RBI for the Crusaders. Looking ahead, Cathedral hosts Foley on Monday, April 21. |
