Cathedral took an early 1-0 advantage in the home half of the first inning. Phil Imholte led off the game reaching safely on an error. He advanced to third on a Steve Rindelaub single and scored on a Nate Schmidt sacrifice fly. St. Michalel-Albertville tied the game at one on a two out wild pitch by Cathedral starter Josh Janzen in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, trailing 2-1, Tom Spaniol singled, but was followed by two consecutive outs. Imholte followed with a walk before Rindelaub’s single to right tied the game. Both teams were held scoreless in the eight inning and St. Michael-Albertville failed to score a run in their half off the ninth inning. Maiers led off the Cathedral ninth with a single, but was picked off. This was followed by singles by Josh Janzen, Imholte and Rindelaub to load the bases with one out. May 16th, 2008

In a rematch of last year’s State Quarterfinal game, Cathedral defeated Hinckley-Finlayson 12-1 on Friday night. The Crusaders won last year, 9-7, en route to their State Championship title. During the game, Cathedral wore throwback pinstriped uniforms on a night in which they honored the 1948, 1968, and 1988 state champion teams.

As has been common during their now nine game winning streak, the Crusaders came out of the gates quickly, scoring three runs in the first thanks to run scoring hits by Kevin Wenner, Eric Schwinghammer, and Brace Hemmelgarn. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle took the lead once again, however, carrying a 6-5 lead into the fifth inning. Morrill, who came in relief for the Thunder, walked the first three batters of the fifth before Josh Janzen’s bases clearing triple gave Cathedral a lead that would stand for the rest of the game. The Crusaders added two more that inning thanks to a Kevin Wenner single and one in the sixth on a Brace Hemmelgarn RBI single.

Coming in relief, Josh Janzen earned the victory, pitching four strong innings. Janzen, in his first pitching appearance of the season he gave up zero runs, one hit, one walk, and struck out one.

Crusaders pay back Huskies with 7-2 win

May 13th, 2008

Busting out their blue uniforms for the first time, Cathedral continued their hot play on Tuesday, winning their seventh consecutive game with a 7-2 win over Albany. The win also avenged a 2-1 loss to Albany on April 22nd.

Albany jumped out to an early 2-0 off Crusaders starter Adam Sperl in a shaky first inning in which he allowed one hit and two walks. Cathedral, however, answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Phil Imholte lead off the game with a single and promptly stole second base. Following a Steve Rindelaub groundout, Nate Schmidt had an RBI single driving in Imholte. Three batters later, Adam Theis drove in two runs with a single, giving the Crusaders the lead at 3-2. Brace Hemmelgarn also had a two run single in the inning. Cathedral added two more runs in the fourth inning thanks to a Schmidt RBI triple and an RBI groundout by Kevin Wenner.

Sperl settled down nicely after the first inning, not allowing another run to cross the plate. In completing his second straight game, Sperl scattered four hits, four walks, and two hit batsmen and striking out one while allowing two earned runs.

Schmidt had two hits, a walk, two runs and a pair of RBI leading the Crusaders offense. Imholte added two hits, two runs and two steals.

Foley quickly answered, scoring one run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to four base hits.

The Crusaders retook the lead in the third inning. With one out, Phil Imholte belted a triple to deep right center driving in Brace Hemmelgarn, who had walked earlier in the inning to give Cathedral a 2-1 edge. Imholte was quickly driven in by Steve Rindelaub pushing the lead to two. Cathedral added two more runs in the fourth thanks to a two-run single by Tom Spaniol and another pair in the seventh on a Kevin Wenner two-run double, giving Cathedral a 7-1 advantage.

Phil Imholte started on the mound for the Crusaders. Despite a shaky start, Imholte settled down nicely, allowing just four hits over the final six innings after allowing four in the first inning alone. Going the distance, Imholte gave up eight hits, one walk, and struck out eight while giving up just one earned run.

Thome tames the Wildcats in 3-0 shutout

May 8th, 2008

Cathedral earned their first shutout of the season, defeating New London-Spicer 3-0 on Thursday night.

The Crusaders set the tone early, scoring two first inning runs. Phil Imholte led off the game with a double to right center. Steve Rindelaub promptly drove him in with a double to nearly the exact same spot. Nate Schmidt followed with a single plating the second run of the game. Cathedral struck again in the second, this time with two outs. Number nine hitter Tanner Smuda drove a single to left, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and stole third, before being driven home on an Imholte single. Despite not scoring after the second, the three runs they did score proved to be enough thanks to a dominant pitching performance by freshman Andrew Thome.

Thome, making his first varsity start and just his second appearance was nearly unhittable. In the complete game effort, Thome allowed three hits, two hit batsmen, no walks and struck out eight while allowing zero runs. He retired the last seven batters that he faced to close out the game.

Sperl resilient as Crusaders sweep Mainstreeters

May 6th, 2008

Cathedral swept the doubleheader from Sauk Centre on Tuesday, winning the nightcap, 4-2.

After losing game one, 6-1, Sauk Centre seemed motivated for payback, scoring the games first run fueled by three hits in the first inning. Cathedral answered the following inning after two Sauk Centre errors lead to an unearned run, socred by Adam Theis, tying the score at one. The Crusaders scored single runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings, giving starter Adam Sperl a three run cushion heading into the bottom of the seventh. Sperl provided drama, loading the bases with two outs following two hit batsmen sandwiched around a single. A single pulled the Mainstreeters within two, but Sperl ended any further threat, firing a strikeout to end the game.

Sperl finished the game scattering eight hits and two hit batsmen while allowing two earned runs, striking out four and walking none.

Nate Schmidt and Steve Rindelaub each had two hits and an RBI for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders uncharacteristically committed three errors in the first inning leading to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle’s lone run of the game and giving them a 1-0 lead. The lead would not last long, however, as Nate Schmidt tied the game in the bottom half of the first with an RBI triple and scored on a Kevin Wenner sacrifice fly to give Cathedral a 2-1 lead. April 22nd, 2008

Cathedral lost 2-1 to Albany Tuesday evening, falling to 2-1 on the year. Albany jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on pitcher Phil Imholte with a first inning run. Despite a narrow margin, the Huskies appeared to be in control behind a strong pitching performance from Brad Mergen. He held the Crusaders scoreless through 5 innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five, preserving the 1-0 lead. Following the 5th innings, Mergen was lifted in favor of Matt Blackmore, who the Crusaders quickly jumped on. Steve Rindelaub lead off the 6th inning with a sharp single and was moved over to second base on an Adam Theis bunt. Tom Spaniol followed with an RBI double to left center field, tying the game at one.

The game appeared to be headed for extra innings when Albany’s Kyle Burg hit a groundball to Rindelaub at shortstop, but Rindelaub’s throw was high, pulling Nick Maiers off the bag. Zach Posterick followed with the game-winning double to right center field. Adam Theis took the loss despite pitching well in relief, allowing just one hit and two walks in 2 2/3 innings.
